Question: Demographics in INS Detention Centers

Is there a way to find out the demographics of those detained in INS detention facilities? I know that different state departments of corrections and the Bureau of Justice release reports on who is in their custody. Is there a similar report by the INS? I'm specifically looking for demographics on women detained by the INS--how many, their countries of origin, and their reasons for detention.

Partial Answer

Yearbook of Immigration Statistics, 2003

Page 151 has statistics detailing a percentage% of those that were removed from the US who were female.

Also on page 151 is a description of the DACS system:

"Individuals detained, removed"

"The data on individuals detained or removed with a formal order of removal or given a voluntary departure under docket control are more extensive. These data are collected via the ICE automated Deportable Alien Control System (DACS). The data captured include immigration status, type of entry into the United States, reasons for removal, history of criminal activity, limited employment
information, and basic demographic information such as date of birth, gender, marital status, country of birth, country of citizenship, and country to which deported. In general, these data are entered in DACS over a period of time that begins with the placing of an apprehended alien in docket control. In some DHS offices most of the data entry is done at the time of case closure (removal,
adjustment of status, etc.)."

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request information for DACS:

This might be the way to go to get the particular information you need. It does not seem to be well represented in the yearbook.
