I was the person that originally called the librarians with this question. It is not easy to answer as the Pentagon has asserted an official role in not counting Iraqi civilian deaths. However, I was able to find a very rare resource, CIVIC Worldwide's Iraqi Civilian War Casualties, an online source that tabulates deaths from March 11-July 21 2003 (found at http://civilians.info/iraq/index.php). My question about deaths in Najaf, however, remains unanswered.
