QUESTION: LGBT YA Literature

question / pregunta:

I am in the process of creating a pathfinder for LGBT books and would like any guides, bibliographies, lists, blogs, websites that you may have in mind for this very significant pathfinder. It will be for young adult fiction and non-fiction at the main library. I can squeeze possibly 100 titles, so would like to be comprehensive.
Thank you for your feedback.

The Lambda Literary Awards include a Children's and Young Adult category. Past award winners are here: //www.lambdaliterary.org/awards/previous_winners/paw_2004_2006.html.

The Human Rights Campaign has several annotated bibliographies listed here http://www.hrc.org/issues/parenting/schools/7839.htm

That should give you quite a bit, but if I think of more sites I will add them.

Here are some titles that have worked for book discussion and/or readers advisory in a public library setting. But make sure they work for your audience! Good luck! It's awesome that you have an opportunity to work on this list.

fiction

Lieberman, Leanne - Gravity
Moore, Perry - Hero
Peters, Julie Anne - most of her YA titles, including Keeping You a Secret; Luna; grl2grl (a short story collection)
Sanchez, Alex - Rainbow Boys, Rainbow High, Rainbow Road (3-volume series); plus So Hard to Say.
Sloan, Brian - A Really Nice Prom Mess
St. James, James - Freak Show
Steinhofel, Andreas - The Center of the World
Winterson, Jeanette - Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit

Marcus, Eric - What If Someone I Know Is Gay? Answers to Questions About What It Means to Be Gay and Lesbian
Merrell, Billy - Talking in the Dark: A Poetry Memoir
Pardes, Bronwen - Doing It Right: Making Smart, Safe, and Satisfying Choices about Sex [yes, a more general title, but it includes a full chapter on LGBQ + a full chapter on trans -- which is kind of unique -- and sometimes it's nice to be able to give more general books to LGBTQ teens, instead of always exclusively LGBTQ-focused ones]
Rooney, Frances - Hear Me Out: True Stories of Teens Educating and Confronting Homophobia
Summer, Jane - Not the Only One: Lesbian & Gay Fiction for Teens

The Rainbow Project is "a joint project of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table and the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association [that] presents an annual bibliography of quality books with significant and authentic GLBTQ content, which are recommended for people from birth through eighteen years of age." This site has annotated book lists from (so far) 2008 and 2009.
