Radref meeting/dinner @ ALA Seattle: Updated minutes

Hi all, below are the updated "minutes" such as they are. I think there are a few items for discussion. I'll post on the list as well.

Radical Reference meeting
Pan African Market, Seattle

Cory Doctorow on the State of the Copyfight

Cory Doctorow spoke about his activities with the EFF in advocating for fair use within the World Intellectual Property Forum, as well as DRM and the Broadcast Flag, at and event cosponsored by NYU Association for Computational Mathematics and Free Culture @ NYU. Though he was addressing himself to geeks, two civilians (his terms) from the NYC RR Collective found his talk very informative.

USA PATRIOT revisited

I was talking with a friend today about Rich Lowry, the "editor" of the National Review, and it reminded me of the editorial that Shinjoung and I wrote in response to one of Lowry's columns about librarians and the USA PATRIOT Act. So I thought I'd post our letter to the editor of the San Diego Tribune. And for fairness' sake, I've posted Lowry's original drivel below the fold (as it should be!). Read on:

missing attachments

Somehow in the upgrade from Drupal 4.6 to 4.7 some (all?) attachments went missing. e.g. You go to http://radicalreference.info/amc/fact_presentation and it tells you to click download, but there's no download to click!

NYC's first ever anarchist book fair

Gretchen, Melissa, and I from the NYC Local Collective have been helping organize and provide librarianly resources for the 1st Ever, 1st Annual (we hope!) NYC Anarchist Book Fair. It will be Saturday, April 14, 2007 from 11-7. We're looking for people to table and to talk.

Some of you may remember me posting about my delicious dream project of using delicious to build a radical reference reference shelf of Web resources. Well, as you can see by the delicious tags in the right column, the dream is becoming reality! Thanks Jenna for adding the del.icio.us block to the radref site!!

Open Source on the Line: Panel Discussion at the New School

Most of the text below from The New School and Rhizome.org , but I did embellish a little and add some links.

With their vast popularity, "open-source" platforms on the Internet are becoming a contested terrain. War on Christmas

A friend just sent me this link to one of her and her partner's little holiday projects: https://marketspace.goodstorm.com/item/quimm/foot_soldier_in_the_war_on_christmas She's also working on a video with the same theme.

Goodbye Clamor

It's a sad day in the small and alternative press world. Clamor Magazine is no more.

What I liked best about Clamor is that it gave young writers and activists a chance to write for am established print publication, get paid a little, share their thoughts in the public commons, etc. It also got them and their opinions into ProQuest, a mainstream interdisciplinary database widely searched in academic libraries, via its inclusion in Alt-PressWatch.
