QUESTION: biographical information

question / pregunta:

I am writing a curriculum for volunteers doing service in the Global South and am including some excerpts from popular books about international development. For all sources I try to include information about the author, including dates of birth (and death if applicable). I cannot find the dates of birth for Paul Collier (author of The Bottom Billion) or William Easterly (author of The White Man's Burden). Can you please help me find them?

RR-NYC collective meeting June 20, 2008

Radical Reference NYC met on June 20th 2008 at 8PM at ABC NoRio.

I didn’t write down who was there!

QUESTION: (de)/commodification

question / pregunta:

hey there!

i've been looking for a solid definition of decommodification (in direct relation to commodification as well as processes of commodifying and decommodifying) and haven't found one other than wikipedia and esping-anderson's three world's of welfare capitalism. can you point me towards any resources?

QUESTION: Alternative subject thesauri

question / pregunta:

I'm not sure if this is an appropriate "Radical Reference" question but I'll give it a try. I'm currently cataloguing a zine collection for the Anchor Archive Zine Library in Halifax. Each zine record has a broad category plus multiple subject terms/keywords describing the content. Assigning subject terms to each zine is challenging, and I think it would be a lot easier if I had a thesaurus of subject terms to refer to, such as Library of Congress Subject Headings but for collections of alternative media. I've tried looking up online catalogues for other zine libraries and alternative bookstores for lists of subject headings, but I haven't found anything yet. Most don't seem to index their content by subject, which is probably smart considering how time consuming it is. I've also posted a message on the Zine Librarians Yahoo Group listserv but I didn't get many responses. Do you have any other suggestions of where I could find alternative thesauri, for alternative media in general or in specific subject areas, such as feminism and anarchism? I would really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!

The Organic Industry

Dr. Philip Howard (Assistant Professor of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies at Michigan State University) maintains information graphics on the structure of the organic industry. Looks like a good resource for other researchers and activists, as well as regular consumers like you and me. Who owns what? Who's merged with whom? And more! (Thanks to the Park Slope Food Coop's "Linewaiters' Gazette" for recently reprinting one of these graphics.)

QUESTION: money transfer business owners

question / pregunta:

I am looking for information about money transfer businesses (like check-cashing and pay-day advance places). Specifically I am looking to see who owns these businesses. Any suggestions? I am most interested in ones located in Oakland CA, but any help would be useful.

QUESTION: 1930's state fairs

question / pregunta:

How would I find out what the cost of various items would have been at the Ohio State Fair in the 1930's? I am looking for the cost of items such as food and games/rides.

QUESTION: Climate Change

question / pregunta:

Has anyone ever tried to seriously calculate the carbon footprint of the current Iraq War? If so, who and what was it? Thanks!
