QUESTION: Mary Schwab records

question / pregunta:

I want to find out if the personal records of Mary Schwab have been archived somewhere. Mary Schwab was married to Rudolph Schwab (son of Michael Schwab of Haymarket fame). She was interviewed in Paul Avrich's Anarchist Voices. In that interview she mentions the 1913 Portland free speech fight and says that she has a "whole valise of material about it." I am trying to find out if that material still exists in an archive somewhere. Thanks.

QUESTION: looking for provocative quotes: universal healthcare and right to organize at work

question / pregunta:

I am trying to gather a number of provocative quotes about two topics:

1. The need for universal healthcare, everyone's moral obligation to care for one another, and the need to address health disparities
2. The importance of workers having the right to organize at work, workers having a voice at work

These quotes are going to be given to several artists who will use the quote to paint a picture. The quotes and pictures will be put into a social justice calendar.

I am looking for a variety of voices: everything from dead prez lyrics to something margaret cho said to a blogger. It would be great if you could send me actual quotes with citations or even sources that I should peep out. Thanks

Workshops for Librarians

Members of Radical Reference NYC have done workshops for librarians and LIS students at the Massachusetts Library Association, New Jersey State Library, the Palmer School, Pratt, and Rutgers, on three different themes. We are happy to reprise them at other library schools and library conferences.

QUESTION: media coverage of 1991 riot at P4W (Prison for Women) in Canada?

question / pregunta:

In 1991, women at P4W (or Prison for Women, Canada's only federal prison for women) rioted. Their riot was sparked by the 4th suicide of a Native woman within a 16-month time period. They barricaded themselves in the recreation room. The state responded by sending in prison guards with tear gas and attack dogs.

Where would I find media coverage (if any) of this event? (This is NOT the same as the 1994 P4W riots where a riot squad violently "extracted" sleeping women from their cells after a physical fight between the women and guards)

QUESTION: My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: California and ssdi/medicare

question / pregunta:

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: California.

Can SSI/Medicare/Medical/Hud Section 8 - look for repayments of benefits paid to date, when I am no longer elegible for benefits going forward?

At this time I have no outstanding debt/or balances owed to any of the above parties as far as I am aware.

If I now purchase property with the help of a low intersest loan from my parents can they attach this asset/mortgage?

I have no savings to date and would like to start saving now? Is any money I now try to save subject to debt repayment/collection in the future. Are benefits paid to date viewd as debt?

I am currently receiving Medicare & Medical and anticipate that this will be cut off shortly due to my income level now. (So far I do not have an alternate means of medical benefits, but that is a whole other issue).

For the past 10 years I have been permamently disabled and received SSI Payments until last year.

I have started back to work

I am currently working part-time and my income is about $30,000 pa.

I am renting an apartment and receive Section 8 co-payments to date, but am at the cut -off threshold.

I am still partially disabled but want to continue working and supporting myself.

I would like to buy an apartment/condo, since my current rent exceeds what my payments would be on a purchase.
I would also like to have the savings vehicle and security of
owning a property for my retirement.

QUESTION: Dubious Jefferson quote by U.S. Senator Jim DeMint

question / pregunta:

Sen. DeMint wrote an article for RealClearPolitics recently that contained this alleged quote from Thomas Jefferson. It sounds plausible but the language seems unnatural for Jefferson. Perhaps it is paraphrased but I'd like to know for sure.

Since the dawn of our nation, Americans have resisted government control over their daily lives. Unlike Europeans who have mortgaged their futures in the name of nationalized health care, we have an innate distrust of big government schemes. We have seen time and time again that the greatness of our nation comes from its people, not from the government. Perhaps most importantly, we understand, as Thomas Jefferson understood, that "Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have." Jefferson went on to explain that "the course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases."
