QUESTION: domestic and global stimulus spending

question / pregunta:

Hello Radical Reference,

I'm looking for good online resources that provide a progressive analysis of stimulus packages/spending in response to the most recent financial/economic crisis in the United States and globally. The article will focus on the speed and scale ($$ amount) of government responses, who benefitted and who didn't, with a particular emphasis on how low income communities and developing countries have fared in the process. I'm on a tight deadline, so any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

QUESTION: origin of quotation

question / pregunta:

"Peace if possible, justice at any rate"

This quotation is written above the stage in the auditorium at DuSable High School where I work on the South Side of Chicago. There is some discussion about the origin of the quote but nobody seems to be sure. It might be from Wendell Phillips? I am a librarian but have not been able to find out what its origin is. The school was built in 1935 and opened in 1936 to replace the Wendell Phillips High School which burned down.

QUESTION: Media Email List

question / pregunta:

!@! Possible Radical Reference Query

I've looked at bit at the site, but I'm not sure if this counts
as a "radical reference" question, nor am I sure how much it is
expected of me to include the reasons why it might be.

Query:

I am looking for an email list for the general media.

I have, of course, been able to create my own list of
the major television, radio and print media, and many
of the Internet media, as well, but I am looking from
the perspective of creating a much more complete list
to use when announcing free eBooks.

Here's the rub.

Every time Google announces a new consortium member--
the media is all over it--even if the added libraries
don't add up to that many possible new eBooks for the
average person to download.

Shortly, I am going to be sending out press releases,
this time for The Fifth Annual World eBook Fair which
promises to have about 3 1/8 million eBooks, free for
the downloading between July 4 and August 4. July 4,
1971 was the date of the first eBook, so this date is
going to mark the start of the 40th year of eBooks.

The First World eBook Fair ended up on the front page
of The Boston Globe, then The New York Times who owns
The Boston Globe, and thence to the AP, etc., and the
total sppears to have been about 1500 newspapers plus
other media outlets worldwide, around four years ago.

However, since that time we have not managed to get a
story about the doubline in size of the books' number
each year since then.

The excuse, when I get them on the phone or email, is
that this is "old news," it has been done before.

Well, it's never been done to the tune of 3+ million!

Heck, you would have a VERY hard time getting just an
eBook download of 1 million eBooks from Google!!!

OK, I've probably said more than enough for now.

Any suggestions on how I can create big media lists?

Ones that don't only include the major media?

Many thanks!!!

QUESTION: groups & resources for an incarcerated woman with breast cancer in Alaska?

question / pregunta:

A woman imprisoned in Alaska was recently diagnosed with with breast cancer. Of course, because she is in prison, she isn't getting timely or efficient medical care from the prison or the medical staff that the prison has contracted with.

Are there groups in Alaska that work with incarcerated women that might be able to help her advocate for timely medical treatment and/or file a suit to force the prison to file medical treatment?

Are there groups that work with incarcerated women with breast cancer?

Are there breast cancer groups that wouldn't shy away from working with a woman who is in prison?

Thanks.

QUESTION: Public Officials, Revolving Doors

question / pregunta:

Recently, there was a large public meeting in North East PA where a gas industry rep (who had worked at the state DEP for many years until getting his new job) said mentioned that his company had hired many people from the DEP. How can I find out who these people are, at least potentially, and their numbers? The specific company was Cabot Oil & Gas, but there are many other companies that could be doing the same thing.
Thank you

QUESTION: Labor Unions and Trust Funds by state

question / pregunta:

Dear Radical Reference,

I am wondering if there is a directory listing of some sort that organizes labor unions and trust funds into state categories. I'm finding that it is an extensive and extremely manually process to visit each union website one at a time to inventory them.

Does a labor union and trust fund inventory, categorized by state exist?
Besides a labor union's website, is there anywhere else to learn about them?

Thank you.

QUESTION: Radical Information and Referral Phone Lines

question / pregunta:

Hi!
I work at the Humboldt Community Switchboard, an information-and-referral phone line that provides references to people in Humboldt County, California, to get them connected to resources and services. I am training new volunteers, and I want them to get a sense of their work as fitting into a larger political picture, where they are interfacing with the whole network of oppression and injustice that lead people to be without services, housing, safety, etc.
Is there any history of the use of information-and-referral phone lines during times of great political activism? I know about pirate radio use during big events like the WTO protests, but I'm wondering if people have set up phone lines, rapid response networks, etc. during these types of events. I'm trying to put together a timeline for this type of use for information and referral services.
Thank you!
