The International Communication Association Conference was held in San Francisco this weekend. I was on a panel titled, "Alternative Journalisms with Bob Ostertag (artist and author of People's Movements, People's Press), Don Hazen (founder of Alternet) and Josh Wolf (the Rise Up Network, prisonblogs.net). The audience was mixed with academics, independent journalists, and community activists. I talked about what RR was doing to support alternative journalists. Many of them were surprised by our work and showed interest.

Bucknell prof Eric Faden along with some of his film students at Bucknell, has produced a terrific video mashup. "A Fair(y) Use Tale" cuts together thousands of extremely short clips from dozens of Disney cartoons, lifting individual words and short phrases to spell out an articulate, funny, and educational lesson on how copyright works, or rather..doesn't work.

Last week, Shinjoung and I were invited to participate at the Crisis of the California Commons Conference. Our panel discussion was with Megan Shaw Prelinger, Annalee Newitz and Bodo Balazs entitled, "Information Commons: Rebirth or Siren Song?" I think there was a lot of discussion about different commmons (environmental, cultural, information etc) that resonate for librarians in general and documents librarians (keepers of the public domain!). You can access the audio here. |

From our friends at Prometheus Radio Project, "Freeing the Airwaves from Corporate Control" Community groups, progressive churches, labor organizations, farmworkers, schools, and more use a wonderful community radio service -- called low power FM radio -- to build their own local radio stations, and broadcast to their local communities. Congress limited low power FM, keeping it from cities all across the country. Our diverse neighborhoods need their own media, and now we have a chance to get it.
